At the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce Installation and Awards banquet  at  McCormick Woods Clubhouse, Wave Business Solutions’ Sales Manager Billi Jean Gurnsey was honored with the 2012 Woman of the Year award.

Her strong commitment to her community made her a clear choice for this year’s award, organizers said in announcing the award.

Billi Jean’s community activism in Port Orchard spans 17 years.

Her Port Orchard civic legacy was born shortly after moving to the area; it didn’t take long for Billi Jean to become a board member of the Fathoms of Fun and through much work and commitment, she became president in 1998.

Her other posts include being on the board of United Way and the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce.

Billi Jean was instrumental in starting the annual Port Orchard Business Showcase event and recently coordinated and celebrated the 10th annual Business Showcase.

Paul Koss, senior vice president of Wave Business Solutions, congratulated Billi Jean for this top community honor.

“Billi Jean is a perfect example of Wave’s commitment of supporting and embracing the communities we serve,” he said.

Coreen Haydock, executive director of Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce, said, Billi Jean has been a “helpful fixture” at the Port Orchard Chamber for many years.

She served on the board for nearly nine years and was board president in 2006-2007.

Billi Jean was the chairperson of the Chamber’s Murder Mystery Weekend for many years and also initiated the Chamber’s successful Annual Business Showcase.

She has volunteered for many other organizations and events in the greater Kitsap community.

Coreen added, “The Woman of the Year program was initiated by the Chamber in 1982 and its first honoree was Harriet Norwood. Billi Jean joins a long line of dedicated community volunteers and activists honored each year by the Chamber.

“A great friend of the Chamber and an excellent salesperson – we are proud to have Billi Jean as our 2012 Woman of the Year!”
