The shop offering hair care more

Sometimes the waiting game isn’t worth sitting down and reading a magazine that’s six months old.

But Shear Attractions Hair Co. offers an alternative for those who’d rather not wait.

While some beauty salons offer the standard waiting room with reading material, Shear Attractions on Bethel Road may have Port Orchard’s first multi-faceted beauty salon.

After starting out as full-service beauty salon, owner Amelia DeMinter and her daughters Judy and Diane soon expanded the business into a gift and beauty supply shop.

“We had a small section for our beauty supplies and customers said they’d like it if we had more,” DeMinter said. “When the chiropractor moved out of the office (behind the salon), we knocked down the wall and expanded.”

Turning the new space into a gift shop has turned out to be a good decision, DeMinter said.

While some customers find something to buy, for many it acts as a nice distraction away from the waiting chair.

“Customers come in and they look around before their appointment,” she said. “Sometimes they just don’t want to sit down and wait.”

The gift shop, called Unique Treasures, carries all kinds of souvenirs and knick-knacks.

DeMinter said walk-ins are welcome, but because of a steady list of clientele, there may not be an immediate opening.

DeMinter said there are no current plans to expand presently, but said she is thinking of more expansion in the future.

“There is a small office space we are renting out right now,” she said. “But if it opens up I’d like to add a tanning salon.”

With the countless number of hair salons in the area, the competition can be fierce at times.

DeMinter hopes the small novelty of a gift shop and the professional care she and her daughters provide can get a leg up on the competition.

Shear Attractions, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, offers full services such as manicures, pedicures, and hair care.
