New shop aims to pamper its clients

Julea Penland admits there are more hair salons in Port Orchard than anyone can count.
But Penland said her new business adds a twist that has yet to be seen in the area.
Penland, owner and operator of Juleas Progressive Salon, goes beyond the shampoo and trim.
Its a full-service hair, nail and massage parlor that caters to the needs of the clientele.
Its a day of beauty, relaxation and the pampering of oneself, Penland said. Theres none like it in Port Orchard.
Located on Bethel Avenue in the shopping complex adjacent to Kentucky Fried Chicken, Juleas Progressive Salon opened for business July 20.
The business is separated between an upstairs (massage, spa) and downstairs (hair, nails).
Penland said shes always wanted to own her own business but the timing and building had to be right.
The interior of the building was badly in need of a makeover, as well, in order to give it a relaxing atmosphere.
With the help of her husband, Penland renovated the building and floors.
Its been pretty amazing, she said. (My husband and I) found the building two months ago and now everything is in place. Weve remodeled the building and the floors.
A hairdresser for 18 years, including 11 in Port Orchard, Penland has hired professionals for the nail and massage departments.
As for finding clients, Penland said she has a bevy of regulars that have switched over, and now shes hoping word of mouth will boost clientele in the massage and nails departments.
Penland said a full day of pampering in a wide range of areas is becoming a popular trend.
Its pretty popular, too, she said. We just havent had it here in Port Orchard before. Its great how things have worked out here so far.
With an unsure economy these days, small town businesses are consolidating combining similar ideas under one roof.
Penland said no matter what the economy is, a full-service salon is here to stay.
Everyone has stress, she said. Our job is to help get the stress out of each individual.
Penland also said it is not a salon that caters to only women.
We offer services for everybody, she said. Men get stressed, too. Theres nothing like a good massage to help rid the stress.
