For almost 20 years, the old R.W. Stanton General Merchandise building has sat vacant in Annapolis.

But new life has entered the building with vintage decor and custom and homemade gifts.

Josephine’s Redeemed Boutique offers a collection of repurposed furniture, vintage décor, local artists gifts and unique items.

Owner Samantha Smith thought about starting the business about three months ago and went through the permitting process.

Smith, who works full time at Kitsap Mental Health, said she started the store because she wanted a creative outlet.

“Me and my dad have always talked about doing a store like this,” she said. “I told him if the rent is OK, lets try it. Everything worked out and it came together for us.”

Smith, a 1996 South Kitsap High School graduate, said some of the inside walls were removed to give the shop more room, along with refinishing the wooden floors.

“I just fell in love with the building since the day I saw it,” Smith said. “But it wasn’t pretty in the beginning.”

Smith said she always liked finding “second purposes” for older items.

“I’m not big into throwing stuff away and I think there is a lot of re-purposing for items,” she said.

Smith explains her store is more decor than antiques. Among some of her items for sale is a old set of lockers from the shipyard, seats from a ferry from the 1960s, an old telephone and an old Duke’s Chowder House sign.

“It’s different and like a treasure hunt,” she said. “I’ll never know what will be here from week to week. I try to keep my prices reasonable.”

Smith said her store is for those individuals who are looking for something unique and that no other stores have.

“If you’re looking for unique gifts, we have them,” she added.

Smith said she’s grateful for the community’s response.

The store, located at 1961 Bay St., is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
