Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes a “girl friday” as a woman who does many different jobs in an office.

The term was commonly used in the 1930s.

Port Orchard now has a “modern-day girl friday.”

Sonia Tosunian moved in November to Port Orchard from Orange County, Calif., and decided to open her own business, “Brighten Your Day.” Her motto is “Your personal assistant for every need.”

“I just wanted more nature and a more peaceful setting,” said Tosunian. “I’ve always wanted to live in this state. I just love it here.”

She was born and raised in California, where she owned her own business in 2008 helping elderly people and those in need of assistance in Laguna Woods.

“There was a large community of about 28,000 senior residents,” she said. “I would help them run errands, then around to doctor appointments and whatever they need. I was their personal assistant. It was very rewarding.”

She said while working in California, a women paid her to drive her 200 miles roundtrip to get her hair cut.

“That was a regularly, monthly thing,” she laughed.

Since opening her business, Tosunian has been mostly assisting her clients with running errands and other miscellaneous chores. She doesn’t clean houses.

Tosunian said she’s “good with people” and she cares.

“I have a passion for people,” she said. “I am very patient. You have to be to work with elderly people.”

She also has experience in assisting for weddings as the bride and groom’s helper, along with assisting families with children (pick-up and drop-off at school or day care, baby sitting and buying groceries) and elderly residents with shopping, doctor appointments, prescription pick-up or just getting away from their home for a few hours.

“One thing I am good at is anticipating people’s needs,” said Tosunian. “I would be a great help to a bride or groom in a wedding situation.”

Tosunian also is available for airport pick-up or drop-off, planning events and is a vegetarian cook. She also enjoys assisting people with interior design and landscaping projects.

In her spare time, she has been busy renovating her home and enjoys digital photography.
