Kiwanis Club of Port Orchard presents scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Port Orchard has awarded six scholarships to six South Kitsap High School graduating seniors.

Kabrianna Tamura was awarded the $2,500 Tom Stansbery Memorial Scholarship, while Shannon Beisley, Athena Ballozos, Mathew Lyman, Richelle Moses and Sarah Rasmussen were awarded $1,500 scholarships.

Criteria for the awards were based on an essay, class standing grade-point average, extra curricular activities, community service and need.

There were a record 44 applicants and each of the outstanding applicants was judged on a point system.

Dr. Thomas Mosby, Career and Technical Education Department director at South Kitsap High, was the chairman of the scholarship committee. Cal Kendall is the president of the Kiwanis Club of Port Orchard.

The Kiwanis Club meets each Wednesday at the United Methodist Church and is welcoming new members.

The Kiwanis Club or Port Orchard was chartered in 1929 and has consistently worked at improving the lives of children in Kitsap County with scholarships, a kindergarten reading program, the TERRIFIC  KIDS program (for elementary students) and Student of the Month recognition for high school students.
