Port Orchard girl semi-finalist in ‘Voice of McDonald’s’ singing competition
By HOPE LASH | Special for the Independent
Port Orchard native Jessica Barry is ready to take her singing career to the next level and it all starts now as the Northwest Region representative in the 2014 “Voice of McDonald’s” (VOM) worldwide singing competition.
"I sing in the car, at work, in the shower, just about anywhere I can. I just love to sing,” said 19-year-old Jessica. “Music has always been a way for me to express myself since I was old enough to carry a tune.”
Jessica entered talent shows while growing up at Hidden Creek Elementary, Marcus Whitman Junior High and South Kitsap High School. This past summer while working at the McDonald’s on Mile Hill, she saw an opportunity to take her singing a step further by entering the VOM contest and submitted a vocal entry.
In September, Jessica was excited to learn that the judges selected her as one of the Top 25 U.S. semi-finalists to represent the McDonald’s Northwest Region that includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
“I enjoy the challenge and creativity of putting my own interpretation on melodies, though I've never had any formal training,” said Jessica, who works part-time at McDonald’s on the morning shift as well as studying business and marketing at the University of Washington-Tacoma campus. “The VOM is a great opportunity for me to learn new skills that enhance my singing.”
Jessica’s first assignment as a semi-finalist was to travel to Los Angeles, where she worked with a voice coach and recorded her music video for the on-line competition website.
The video is posted online and votes are registered as viewers vote for the favorite singer.
If Jessica is chosen as one of the top three United States favorites in this vote-driven competition, she will perform live at the McDonald’s 2014 Worldwide Convention in Orlando against 15 other global finalists.
The winner will receive $25,000 plus opportunities to connect with top music industry producers and performers.
Voting for Jessica is open from Oct. 28 to Dec. 2, at www.voiceofmcdonalds.com.
“I’m representing Port Orchard, McDonald’s and the State of Washington,” said Jessica. “If you think I’m good then vote for me.”
