Skate park benefit on Saturday
May 29, 2009 · 3:04 PM
A fundraising event to benefit the Skatepark to be located in South Kitsap Regional Park will take place Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
The Port Orchard Rampjam Contest and Fundraiser will feature four bands, alternating with open skate sessions and contests on three skill levels.
“Kids need to be off the streets and out of the parking lots and in a safe environment,” said Leslie Reynolds, president of the South Kitsap Skatepark Association, which is sponsoring the event. “Our purpose is to raise the money to build a skate park and give the kids a place to go.”
The county has allocated $300,000 for skate park construction, but this is only 3/4 of what is required to build the first phase of the park.
Participants will be assessed a $10 entrance fee. While Saturday’s event is not expected to raise the $100,000 needed to complete the first phase of the project, it is intended to create awareness that the funds are needed.
Four bands (FNA’s, Neon Nights, Valkyries and The Enemies Of…) will perform beginning at noon. The bands will alternate with competitions at 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00 (beginner, intermediate and advanced, respectively) and free skates at noon, 2:00 and 4:00.
The park is located on the corner of Jackson and Lund in Port Orchard.
