A 47-year-old man was found hanging in his jail cell at approximately 3 p.m. today by Kitsap County Jail (KCJ) corrections officers, according to a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) report.

The man was an inmate at the jail after being arrested several times on charges stemming from protection order violations. His most recent arrest, just two weeks ago on July 29.

KCSO detectives, working in collaboration with patrol officers from the Port Orchard Police Department, have initiated an investigation into the inmate’s death. Investigators believe that the man’s death is a suicide.

The inmate was last contacted at 2:30 p.m. during hourly cell checks when he was discovered. Additional back-up officers and jail medical staff were immediately dispatched to the scene where CPR was initiated and maintained until medic units arrived from South Kitsap Fire and Rescue (SKFR).

SKFR medic crews continued life saving efforts en route to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have contacted and notified next of kin.

The Kitsap County Coroner will schedule a post-mortem autopsy with the county’s forensic pathologist and upon completion, will issue a formal determination as to cause and manner of death.

Details will be updated as they become available.
