A 27-year-old Port Orchard man was charged with vehicular assault after crashing a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle into a tree at 2:22 a.m. Sunday, the Washington State Patrol reports.

The report lists the cause of the crash as driving under the influence.

As the driver went south on Locker Road, he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with State Route 160, according to the report.

The vehicle went through the intersection and hit a tree off the east shoulder of the road.

Both the driver and a passenger — a 26-year-old Auburn man — were injured and transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center. The vehicle was totaled and impounded.
