Forum will address public's questions on property tax issues

Property taxes — a subject that gets plenty of people worked up, especially when they get their annual assessments — will be the topic of a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kitsap next week.

The group will present Property Tax: Sorting Fact from Fiction on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Eagle’s Nest, 1200 Fairgrounds Road in Bremerton.

Kitsap County Assessor Jim Avery and Kitsap County Treasurer Meredith Green will be featured speakers.

The public is invited to come with questions.

The forum will explain issues such as how houses and property are assessed; why property taxes don’t automatically decline when the assessed value of a property decreases; tax breaks that are available to the elderly, the disabled and those on fixed incomes; and how voter-approved levies affect property taxes.

The forum will also include a discussion of the Veterans and Human Services levy that is on the ballot in the November election.
