State Patrol makes 161 DUI arrests over holiday weekend
December 28, 2011 · Updated 8:18 AM
Washington State Patrol troopers across the state arrested 161 drivers suspected of being impaired by drugs or alcohol over the Christmas holiday weekend.
The number is down from 194 arrests during the same period in 2010. But three fatal collisions occurred during the holiday weekend, with one involving drugs or alcohol. There were no fatal collisions over the same holiday weekend a year ago.
A comprehensive number of DUI arrests including local sheriff's deputies and city police officers was not immediately available.
Local law enforcement agencies will continue to conduct extra DUI patrols throughout Kitsap County until Jan. 2 to rid the roads of impaired drivers during the holiday season.
Through Nov. 30, state troopers had logged 20,130 DUI arrests for the year. That's up about 1 percent from the same period last year, but falls within the normal range of year to year variance, the State Patrol reports.
