Bloomquist Rotary Park, ball fields to be dedicated June 30
June 22, 2012 · 10:43 AM
On Saturday, June 30, Kitsap County and Port Orchard Rotary will honor one of the community’s finest with the dedication of the Bill Bloomquist Rotary Park. The recently renovated fields will serve as the home of South Kitsap Girls Softball Association.
Bill Bloomquist, a longtime Port Orchard Rotary member, is being recognized for his commitment to the community. Local Rotarians searched diligently to find a fitting project that recognizes his leadership and involvement – and his love for baseball.
Son Willie Bloomquist became a great local ballplayer and part of the South Kitsap local color. When he made it to the major leagues he captured the hearts of Mariners fans, and now plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Port Orchard Rotary, working with the county’s Parks Department, has donated for the renovation of the two ball fields, repair and replacement of fencing and gates.
The Rotary also funded improvements to the parking lot. Long-range plans may include a batting cage, team benches, bleachers, a storage facility and expanded parking.
Kitsap County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido, Port Orchard Rotary President Cathy Ecker and Bloomquist family members will be on hand for the ribbon cutting.
South Kitsap Softball Association teams are scheduled to play on the fields immediately following the ceremony.
