Macomber eyeing larger role with Seahawks
Debbie Macomber has written countless women’s fiction books and production for a television program based on her Cedar Cove series is in production.
But that does not mean Macomber has fulfilled her goals.
She actually has established new ones, including buying at least a portion of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
Macomber and her husband, Wayne, are avid Seahawks fans. They have been season-ticket holders since 1977.
That longtime connection with the franchise was an impetus toward creating a partnership between the franchise and the South Kitsap School District. Macomber said she purchased an advertisement at CenturyLink Field and asked the Seahawks officials if they would be willing to work with SKSD schools, where Macomber’s children attended, in return.
It started May 2 when South Kitsap High School certified athletic trainer and teacher Katie Finnie took 19 students to the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, which is the Seahawks’ headquarters. Finnie said they were at the facility from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition to meeting with the athletic-medicine staff, students visited with the Seahawks’ strength and conditioning coach and toured the facility.
The latest component of the partnership was Monday when multiple former Seahawks — and current Seattle wide receiver Ricardo Lockette — visited the district’s three junior highs and high school to prepare a strategy to reach their goals during the summer. Macomber compared it to an offseason plan for NFL players.
“My goal is for the Seahawks to inspire our kids to use their offseason wisely,” Macomber said.
She said SKSD and the Seahawks are planning another event Aug. 18. Macomber said former Seahawks running back Randall Morris, who played with the team from 1984-88, will be in a dunk tank that day.
Macomber said she is pleased with how the partnership is working.
“It’s a really big thing for our community,” she said. “It shows how important it is to follow dreams.”
Macomber has done that. In addition to working on the partnership, she has started writing her latest book, “The Inn at Rose Harbor.” Her latest book is set to be released in August.
In the meantime, Macomber also is spending time in Victoria, British Columbia, where the Cedar Cove series is being filmed.
