Proposed toll hikes approved
June 12, 2008 · Updated 8:53 AM
A proposal to increase the current toll rates for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge by a dollar for all drivers was approved this week by the Washington State Transportation Commission.
Earlier this year, the TNB Citizen Advisory Committee recommended a one-dollar increase across the board, raising the transponder (electronic toll collection) rate to $2.75, and the cash price to $4. The new prices will take effect July 1.
The $1-increase over current toll rates was deemed necessary to meet the financial obligations associated with the bridge, according to the commission.
Approval of the new rates begins a public comment period that will end May 27. The Commission has scheduled a public input meeting on May 20 from 6 8 p.m. at The Inn at Gig Harbor, 3211 56th Street NW, Gig Harbor.
The public is encouraged to attend that meeting and offer comments on the toll rate proposal.
Then on May 27, the Commission will hold a final hearing at the same time and location, where it will take additional public comment and adopt the final toll rates for the bridge.
