Plans are underway for an extension of the Veterans Wall of Honor near the waterfront at Marina Park.

John Weatherill, the Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2669 in Port Orchard, said demand was strong enough for the first wall that an additional wall makes sense.

Weatherill, a Vietnam War veteran, said construction on a new, single-faced wall will begin after all of the 508 bricks are sold. It will rest directly behind the original wall, a 28-foot long structure with 1,200 bricks that was built earlier this year.

Bricks for that structure cost $30. Weatherill said it was a way to recognize and honor veterans. The newer wall will feature larger bricks, which Weatherill said includes future maintenance expenses.

He said the new wall, which is reserved for anyone who has served in the military, also will feature a section that is reserved for Medal of Honor recipients.

The idea to build a wall to honor veterans was developed by former VFW member Joseph Hovey and his brother. Hovey died shortly before the groundbreaking ceremony in March.
