School Board selects student members
June 12, 2008 · Updated 8:58 AM
The South Kitsap School Board has selected two students, instead of its previous allotment of one, to positions on the board following a decision earlier this year to include a younger representative.
The board has selected South Kitsap High School Junior Chelsea Thomas and Sophomore Colton Habernict to serve as student representatives, beginning at the end of April.
After one year, Habernict will take over the senior position, and serve as a representative and mentor to the next student. Each student on the board afterward will serve two years beginning at the end of their sophomore year and ending at the end of their senior year
The purpose of the position is to give students a voice on school issues and to provide a means for the board to communicate with the student population.
Thomas and Habernict were selected from three candidates, and will replace Sarah Brown, whose term expires at the end of April.
Thomas and Habernict will attend all school board meetings and are considered non-voting member of the board.
Thomas is a volunteer in many capacities, including at the Senior Fair at Kitsap County Fairgrounds, the Special Olympics, South Kitsap Peewees and area schools.
She served as a Youth Involvement Chair for the American Cancer Societys Relay for Life.
Habernict is active in the high schools NJROTC and leadership program, and carries a 4.0 grade point average in his Beginning CADD and Architectural 1 & 2 classes.
