A 17-year-old South Kitsap boy died this week after hitting a tree with his car on Glenwood Road Sunday night, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A spokeswoman with the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Shaun M. Olson died Monday afternoon in Tacoma General Hospital from injuries he sustained in the crash.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said that Olson was driving a 2000 Ford Focus southbound near the 10400 block of Glenwood Road near Kendora Lane when he apparently lost control of the vehicle for reasons investigators have yet to determine.

“We don’t know why, but from the appearance of the scene, excessive speed could be a factor,” said Wilson, explaining that the car careened off both shoulders of the roadway before coming to a stop.

“It crossed the center line and went off the roadway to the left, striking a trash can and mailbox, then it crossed the centerline to the other side again, hitting a wooden fence and driving into an open field before it struck a tree,” Wilson said.

He said Olson was unconscious with “severe head trauma” when medical personnel arrived on scene, summoned by witnesses in the area who called 911.

He said it is was not known yet whether alcohol or any other intoxicants played a part in the crash, and that Olson was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
