An elderly South Kitsap man was killed Sunday night when his Burley home caught fire after food was left cooking on the stove, according to South Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

Several people called 911 to report the fire shortly before 10 p.m., some of whom drove by the home on Stevens Road — located just north of the Pierce County line — and saw the flames.

When SKF&R crews arrived at the home 10 minutes later, they found the single-story home engulfed in flames, which had spread to 75 percent of the structure.

Neighbors advised the crews that an elderly man lived at the home, and the firefighters soon located him in the back room, apparently killed by the smoke and high heat.

SKF&R crews, aided by Pierce County Fire District 16, extinguished the fire.

The Pierce County Fire Marshal investigated the scene, determining that the cause of the fire was a pan left unattended on the stove.

Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom said his office would be performing an autopsy on Monday to determine the victim’s cause of death.

As of Monday afternoon, Sandstrom said his office was still working to identify the deceased, and could not release more information.
