BB-gun shots at buses lead to arrests
June 12, 2008 · Updated 9:57 AM
"Two boys have been arrested for--and one has admitted--shooting out windows on two South Kitsap School District buses. The boys, both students in the district, have also been suspended from school for the rest of the school year. The Kitsap County Sheriff Department said a windshield and a drivers-side window were shattered Dec. 1 when fired upon with a BB gun as they were carrying students home on Lakeway Boulevard.Authorities initially reported the damage was caused by rocks thrown by unknown suspects. But acting on tips from other students, investigators arrested a junior high school student and an elementary school student. One confessed to the shooting, and the gun was recovered from where it had been hidden in woods. Both boys were released to their parents. One has denied involvement in the incident and is awaiting charges.A conviction on a charge such as reckless endangerment could lead to jail time in the juvenile justice system--suitable punishment for a serious crime, authorities said.People could have been injured if startled drivers had lost control of the buses, noted Mike Davis, chief of detectives for the Sheriff Department. This kind of incident cant be taken lightly. According to investigators, the boy who admitted to shooting at the buses also said other vehicles were fired upon. No reports of the vehicles being struck have been confirmed, however."
