"Joann Vance is retiring after 24 years of fulfilling her life-long dream. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, she said.Vance, who has spent the past eight years teaching third grade at Sidney Glen Elementary School in the South Kitsap School District, said television has brought changes in students' behavior and education since the 1970s. They are more outgoing now than they used to be, she said. She also mentioned television has played a role in increasing school violence. We have to be very concerned about it, stated Vance. Vance said students are learning a wider variety of subjects due to TV. Teachers used to just teach the three Rs--reading, writing, and arithmetic--but now must teach social skills, as well, she said. Before arriving at Sidney Glen, she taught at elementary schools for 18 years in Oregon for the Beaverton School District. The best part about teaching is watching students go through the school system and graduate, said Vance. She wishes several things for South Kitsap schools as she leaves them, including that a new high school eventually is built and all levies and bonds pass. It's a very good district, she said.Traveling, golfing and spending more time with her children and grandchildren will be Vance's post-retirement activities."
