A 2-year-old Burley girl was pronounced dead Thursday evening at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma after falling into her family’ swimming pool.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be freshwater drowning.

Aiden Grew was rushed to Mary Bridge just after 4 p.m. Thursday after being pulled out of the pool unconscious and unresponsive. Fire District 7 paramedics tried to resuscitate the girl, but district spokeswoman Lisa Kirkemo said the girl was not breathing and did not respond to aid efforts.

Grew was taken via aid car to Tacoma, where she was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office ordered an autopsy, which was performed Saturday. Steven Mell, an investigator with the office, said the medical examiner routinely orders autopsies for all accidental deaths. Mell said the examiners found nothing to indicate the death was anything but a tragic accident.

Kirkemo said the district’s chaplain was called in to assist Grew’s family.

“Unintentional drownings are a problem,” she said. “Things like this are hard.”
