Man arrested for allegedly beating puppy

An 18-year-old transient who was reportedly kicking a puppy in and out of a ditch on Bethel-Burley Road was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a witness called 911.

The suspect was booked on one count of first-degree animal cruelty at his arraignment Thursday. He was originally held under $10,000 bail after being booked into Kitsap County Jail, but later released on personal recognizance.

According to the report filed by the Kitsap County SheriffÂ’s Department, at least three witnesses told the deputy that responded to the 1300 block of SE Pine around 1 p.m. that they saw the suspect grab his dog by the collar, throw it into the street and then kick the animal up to a dozen times.

According to the deputy, when he asked the suspect what had happened, he claimed he had grabbed the dog by the collar to pull it out of the ditch because it did not have a leash.

He said he did not throw or kick the dog, but was pushing it with his leg to keep it out of the road.

The deputy then reported the incident to the Kitsap Humane Society, who dispatched an officer to pick up the dog. The officer recommended the man be charged with animal cruelty, and said the dog would be examined for injuries.
