A Gig Harbor man is dead following a T-bone collision Saturday at the intersection of State Route 3 and Lake Flora Road in South Kitsap.
According to Washington State Patrol reports, the 83-year-old man was attempting to turn left onto southbound SR 3 just before 3 p.m. when his 2001 Chrysler two-door was struck broadside by a northbound 1977 GMC pickup driven by a 50-year-old Port Orchard man. State Patrol spokesman Trooper Brian George said there was no clear evidence why the two cars collided the road was dry and the weather Saturday afternoon was clear. There was also no evidence the pickup took the Gig Harbor man by surprise.
Its real good visibility there, George said.
The Gig Harbor man, who as the driver took the brunt of the impact, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, who was riding as a passenger next to him, was transported to Tacoma General Hospital. She was still in the intensive care unit and listed in serious condition as of Monday afternoon.
Neither the Port ORchard man nor his passenger his 21-year-old son was injured in the collision. However, both cars were totalled.
George said the state Patrol is still investigating the collision, although it appears the Gig Harbor man may have been at fault.
The person on the highway has the right of way, he said. It just seems like a right-of-way violation.
