Sweeney described as a ‘smooth talker’

A 16-year-old Bremerton resident said when she met Charles Patrick Sweeney at a concert, he made her feel like she was “the only girl.”

“He was a real smooth talker,” said the girl, whose name is being withheld due to her age. “He’s just really good at it. He just knew how to make you feel special.”

Soon after their meeting that night at the Roxy in Bremerton, she and Sweeney began hanging out. He would pick her up after her junior high classes, she said, and take her back to his apartment in Port Orchard.

Although she was only 15, she said it did not worry her that he was 24.

“I knew how old he was, but it didn’t bother me,” she said. “He said he didn’t care about age, either.’

Although she says they never had sexual intercourse, it was not long before Sweeney began to pressure her for it.

“That’s when I figured out he was a creep,” she said, though she admitted her closest friend had been warning her of that all along. “She told me, ‘That guy’s no good — what are you doing with him?’ But I didn’t pay attention.’ ”

Although she did stop seeing Sweeney within a month, she said she wishes she had heeded her friend’s warning sooner — especially after she learned last week that Sweeney was arrested early this month for allegedly videotaping teens while they engaged in sex at his house.

“I was disgusted” when I read that, she said. “I knew he was bad, but I didn’t know how bad. That blew my mind.”

Sweeney, 26, pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor at his arraignment May 7 in Kitsap County Superior Court. Both charges were allegedly committed against two now-17-year-old teens on or between June 1 and Dec. 31, 2003, and are felonies carrying maximum sentences of 10 years in prison.

According to Port Orchard Police Officer Stan James, his office is investigating several more potential victims ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old, and so far has identified at least two of the victims as South Kitsap residents.

The teen who claims she could have been one of his victims said she was “very happy he was arrested, and I hope he gets sent to jail for a long time,” she said. “He’s dirty.”

Once she broke it off with him, she said “I pretty much told every girl I knew to stay away from him,” she said.

But, apparently, many teens already knew of Sweeney.

“There were so many girls at different shows, and at (Olympic College) that knew him,” she said.
