Suspect's wide load leads to arrest
June 12, 2008 · Updated 11:33 AM
A 28-year-old Port Orchard man was arrested early Monday morning after his trailer loaded with reportedly stolen property overturned and spilled onto the road.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident began shortly after 5 a.m. when a commercial vehicle enforcement officer spotted the suspect driving a Peterbuilt dump truck south on State Route 3 in Belfair hauling a trailer that appeared to be too wide.
The officer stopped the suspect, who then turned into the driveway of a NAPA auto parts store, overturning the trailer and dropping the excavator he was hauling in the process.
According to the report, once the truck stopped, the suspect fled on foot, and the enforcement officer who is not authorized to pursue suspects called for backup.
A short time later, a responding trooper apprehended the suspect near Bremerton National Airport. The suspect was then booked into Mason County Jail.
According to WSP spokesman Brian George, the dump truck and trailer had been reportedly stolen from one business, while the excavator had been stolen from another.
