Lawnmower accident kills toddler in Manchester

A 2-year-old boy was killed Sunday when he was crushed by a lawnmower in Manchester, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department.

Tyler Johnson was apparently playing in a sandbox in the backyard of a home on the 5000 block of East Collins Road shortly before 11 a.m. when he was struck by a riding lawnmower operated by an adult family member.

According to the sheriff’s office, emergency medical personnel from Fire District 7 responded to the scene and were able to lift the mower off the toddler and attempted to resuscitate him.

The boy was transported to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma but died upon arrival.

According to sheriff’s detectives who also responded to the scene, the family member began to mow a narrow strip of the backyard after seeing the toddler playing in the sandbox approximately 25 feet away.

The strip of grass was apparently too narrow to allow the mower to be turned around, so the operator placed it in reverse to exit the section. The mower had only reversed a few feet before it struck the child. The driver was unable to lift the mower off the child and called 911.

Investigators determined the incident was accidental, and no criminal charges are pending.

The sheriff’s department reminds operators of vehicles or heavy equipment to ensure clearance before reversing the machinery, and to keep children away from any areas involving the use of motorized equipment.
