Since the resignation of South Kitsap Parks and Recreation Commissioner John Palo, Board of Commissioners Chair Larry Walker has been considering applications from community members interested in filling Palo’s seat on the board.

Walker said he received six applications in all since Palo stepped down.

Two of the applications, those of former Commissioners David Kimble and John Conte, specified they wanted to be considered only if Commissioner Charlotte Garrido stepped down.

Since Garrido is still on the board, Walker said Kimble and Conte have “removed themselves from consideration.”

The other four candidates — Karsten Boysen, Deborah Heller, Ryan Rees and Dulce Setterfield — will be interviewed today from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Port Orchard branch of the Kitsap County Public Library System.

According to Walker, the members of the board would like to thank the applicants for their civic spirit.

As for a favorite candidate, Walker said everyone truly is equal in standing.

“We’re going to wait and see how they interview,” Walker said.

Questions will include what the candidates’ vision for South Kitsap Community Park is, their goals for the park, their knowledge of the park’s physical and political history and how they currently utilize the park.

The new commissioner is expected to be seated Thursday, Jan. 13.
