Nope, not reindeer

An elderly South Kitsap woman drove her car onto the roof of a home on Bay Street Monday afternoon after apparently falling asleep at the wheel, according to Police Chief Alan Townsend.

“It could have been much worse,” Townsend said, describing the sight of June Vanderstaay’s car “teetering” on the verge of collapsing into the home as “spectacular.”

Townsend said Vanderstaay was driving eastbound on Bay Street shortly after 3 p.m. when she began swerving, then ultimately drove off the road and onto the roof of a rental home on the 1000 block.

“She was trapped in the car for about 20 minutes, I believe, until they could stabilize it,” he said, explaining that rescue crews had the victim, who did not appear to be badly injured, crawl over the back seat so they could reach her.

Townsend said the woman was complaining of back pain, and was transported to the hospital for an evaluation.

No one was inside the home at the time of the crash.
