Chamber to send parcels to SK troops in Iraq
With a $600 donation for shipping from the South Kitsap Rotary firmly in hand, the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce is collecting donations of various items to fill 90 individual care packages destined for Iraq.
A list of 90 National Guardsmen from Port Orchard currently serving in Iraq was compiled by the Chambers Military Affairs Committee, along with a list of supplies desperately needed by the soldiers.
We were given the list here in the office by the Military Affairs Committee, said Lynne Erickson, a staff member at the chambers downtown office. We are getting some great responses.
According to Erickson, many individuals are giving monetary donations and thats just fine. The soldiers cant use money, but chamber members and staff will do the shopping.
Its a busy time of the year and if people chose to give donations, we would definitely do the shopping for them, Erickson said.
Some of the most interesting donations being asked for are flea collars, which soldiers wear around their ankles to protect themselves against sand fleas.
According to Erickson, the chamber has collected just 74. They need 180 one for each ankle of each soldier.
Hard candy is also popular, since soldiers often give the candy to Iraqi children as they pass through towns.
But no chocolate, Erickson said. It melts in the heat.
Erickson said the boxes must be filled and shipped by Dec. 30.
Were not aiming for Christmas, but we want to get the items on their way to the soldiers by the end of the year, Erickson explained.
Again, the chamber is accepting donations of:
--Â bars of Ivory soap
--Â tabasco Sauce
-- blank Greeting Cards
-- hard candies
--Â flea collars
-- dry flavor mixes
-- smoked salmon
Donations can be dropped off at the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce Office at 1014 Bay Street in Port Orchard. Those who donate will receive a tax-deductible donation slip at the time of their drop off.
