Last night, the Mile Hill McDonald’s restaurant celebrated a much anticipated event — the grand opening of its brand-new playground.

Officially called a “Mega PlayPlace,” the towering assortment of brightly colored things just begging to be crawled on has been teasing kids and their moms for months, as it could be seen through the windows, but could not be opened until this week.

“We’re really excited — we’ve had so many frustrating delays,” said Karen McKay of the Peninsula McDonald’s Office in Bremerton, explaining that various problems, including one with the sprinkler system, delayed the opening that was originally expected to happen as early as February.

“We had so many people calling us and asking when it would open,” McKay said last month, explaining that she started keeping a list of all the moms and group members that called so she could call them when it finally opened.

“I know that when it does open, it will be great, especially because it will be heated,” she said. “The old PlayPlace was real cold, more like the temperature of the outside. This will be much more comfortable for families.”

Although the official grand opening — which included a visit from Ronald McDonald — was last night, the Mile Hill Restaurant will be offering daily specials all week, such as 99-cent Egg McMuffin sandwiches today, and 99-cent Quarter Pounders with Cheese tomorrow.

McKay said that during the week customers can also enter a drawing to win a mountain bike, fleece blankets or free food.
