“Ladies Night Out” fundraiser to help family of young girl injured in assault

A fundraiser will take place Friday, April 19, for a 4-year-old girl who has a severe brain injury.

“Ladies Night Out” is from 6-10 p.m. at the Port Orchard Pavilion and proceeds from the event will go to Minnow Stewart and her family.

The girl was injured Jan. 28 in her Lake Symington home near Seabeck.

“We are raising money for the ‘Making Minnow Smile’ fund, “ said Amber Herrera, a friend of Minnow’s mother, Shannon Stewart.

Admission to the event is free and men are also welcomed. There will be door prizes and 50 vendors will be on hand. There is also a silent auction, music and food.

Herrera said many people and businesses throughout Kitsap County have donated items for the auction.

“Myself and Erin Kirby started this event to help raise money for Shannon,” Herrera said. “We want to help Shannon stay by Minnows bedside so that she can care for her and her other children, too. There will be many expenses to come for Shannon.”

Minnow spent two months in Tacoma hospital with severe brain injuries as a result of an assault. Her mother’s boyfriend, Jason D. Reese, 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree child assault.

Since being admitted to the hospital, the young girl has undergone a number of surgeries, including the removal of half of her skill to relieve brain swelling. Doctors later reattached the skull.

Minnow was released from the hospital for the first time on March 9 after she made some major milestones in her recovery, Herrera said.

Since being released, Herrera said Minnow has been in and out of the hospital due to pain, blindness and other setbacks.
