It’s being called “The World’s Biggest, Best (and maybe only) Seagull Calling Festival,” which will take place on Sunday, May 26, at the Port Orchard Waterfront Park and Marina.

The festival is sponsored by the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce.

This is the 25th year of the annual festival, including the sixth year of the Seagull Wings Cook-off.

During the morning hours, hundreds of “seagull” wings will be created, grilled and served up by both amateur and commercial contestants.

According to Coreen Haydock, Chamber executive director, there has been 10 commercial and four amateur entries so far. Because of the festival’s 25th anniversary, the Chamber waived entry fees for the cook-off contest.

Last year’s commercial winner, MoonDogs Too, will look to repeat. They won the People’s Choice Award last year. MoonDogs Too owner Darryl Baldwin issued a “restaurant thrown down” to local eateries.

Also, the amateur category winner — Steve Sego and Team Sego Seagulls — will look to make it three-in-a-row this year.

Judges will sample, deliberate and announce “Whose Wings Reign Supreme!” for amateurs (home cooks and grillers) and commercial (restaurants, caterers, other commercial kitchens).

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. the public can purchase tickets for $1 a wing donation and attendees can vote on the People’s Choice.

But there is more fun to come.

At 2 p.m., the Seagull Calling Contest gets underway. Contestants — young and old, some in costumes — will take turns on the beach “calling the seagulls.” Contestants will try to mimic the seagull’s cry and bribe the birds with tortillas, French fries, bread — and even bribe the judges — with candy cookies and sometimes even money, to win various coveted prizes. There is no cost to participate in the contest.

Registration for the contest will start at 1 p.m. and all past winners are encouraged to complete.
