Tuesday night fire damages Port Orchard home
The cause of a fire that damaged a home in the 1400 block of Garrison Avenue is under investigation.
A family of five returned home about 9 p.m. Tuesday night to find a small fire in their home and called 911.
South Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters arrived at the scene and found flames coming from a window on the south side of the home. Firefighters battled the fire from the outside until other crew members entered the home to extinguish the fire.
Battalion Cheif Jon Gudmundsen said it appears the fire originated in the kitchen
The street was blocked off at both ends while crews handled the blaze and no other homes were threatened by the fire. There were no injuries reported.
The house suffered heavy smoke and heat damage. The family stayed in a hotel.
Gudmundsen said crews arrived at the fire after responding earlier to a minor house fire. He said firefighters responded to three fires Tuesday.
Gudmundsen said seven engines and more than 30 firefighters responded to the scene.
“The reason there were so many engines and firefighters was because of volunteering training at a nearby fire station,” Gudmundsen said. “Three of the engines were volunteer and about half of the firefighters at the scene were volunteers.”
Gudmundsen said that the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s office is handling the investigation.
