Council awards contract for STEP system conversions

The Port Orchard city council awarded a $351,428 contact for the 2014 McCormick Woods STEP (septic tank effluent pump) system conversion at its March 12 meeting.

Ron Hemley Septic Installation was awarded the bid for the project, which began March 12 and is scheduled for completion on Sept. 15.

The city received two bids on the project — the other was a $871,469 bid from Pivetta Brothers, Inc.

STEP systems are based on single septic tank systems with electric pumps to move the effluent to a community force main (low pressure sewer) system.

In other action, the council:

• Approved a $60,000 contract with N.L. Olson and Associates, Inc. for the Sidney Road Stabilization Design project at the Ruby Creek crossing. The contract includes topographic survey, geotechnical analysis, storm analysis and permit assistance.

• Approved a public event application by Fathoms o’ Fun Festival for the Port Orchard Seagull Splat 5K Run on Saturday, May 24. The run will begin at Westbay Center and runners will race along Bay Street to Olney Avenue. Runners will then turn around and finish at the Port Orchard Marina Park.

The council also approved public event applications for the Fathoms o’ Fun Festival Grand Parade and the FOF Summer Festival and Vendor Show.
