Activities fee increases for some SKSD activities for 2014-15 period

South Kitsap School District’s Board of Directors approved a pair of modest fee increases July 15.

Freshmen at the district’s three junior highs — Cedar Heights, Marcus Whitman and John Sedgwick — will pay $45 to participate in athletics this year, which is a $5 increase from last year.

“That’s because the ninth graders are now playing at the high-school level,” said Dave Colombini, SKSD assistant superintendent for educational services. “That fee now will cover any of their activities at the high-school level.”

Students pay $75 per sport at South Kitsap High School. Athletic director Ed Santos said that revenue is used to pay for transportation to games.

The knowledge bowl also is being reintroduced at the high school, where Colombini said it existed several years ago. That activity also will feature a $75 charge. Colombini said that will cover registration for events and transportation.

That also is the reasoning, Colombini said, behind the increased participation fee for high-school debate. That activity will cost $75 for the upcoming school year — a $50 increase from 2013-14.
