A Burley man lost his front porch and kitchen to a fire that broke out shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Eric Knight, who owns the home on the 14000 block of Willow Road S.E., said he was at work when the fire started, but fortunately his son was home next door.

“I saw the flames, and grabbed a fire extinguisher,” said Nick Knight, 21. While Knight tried to douse the flames, friend T.J. Schlosser called 911.

“(The firefighters) said he did good,” said Eric Knight, describing his son as “our hero in the U.S. Army Reserves.”

After South Ktisap Fire and Rescue personnel put out the fire, the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to investigate. Knight said an electrical outlet may have started the fire, but SKFR Duty Chief Guy Dalrymple said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Dalrymple said the front porch and kitchen were destroyed, and estimated the damage at $10,000.

“Well, I wanted to remodel the kitchen anyway,” Knight joked.
