A former Port Orchard resident was killed Sunday night during a single-car accident on Lake Helena Road, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said the victim has been identified as Gig Harbor resident Diane D. Racine, 57, who previously lived in Port Orchard.

Wilson said the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 when the car she was riding in, a 2000 Ford Escort driven by her 21-year-old daughter, also a Gig Harbor resident, crashed on Lake Helena Road at Huckleberry Road.

Wilson said the Escort was headed westbound on Lake Helena Road when for unknown reasons the driver lost control and the vehicle left the roadway, hitting several trees before returning to the roadway.

Racine was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on-scene by South Kitsap Fire and Rescue personnel. The driver was transported to a Tacoma hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Wilson said Monday it was still unknown whether speed, alcohol or other factors were involved in the crash, and the investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Deputy Andrew Aman at (360) 337-4634.
