Washington State Patrol officials announced at around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday that State Route 3 in Gorst was finally cleared after a three-hour closure resulting from a fatality accident.

An elderly woman was killed when her small sedan collided head-on with a large Dodge pickup as she was driving the wrong way in the southbound lane of SR3 just north of Gorst near 9:30 a.m.

A total of three cars were involved.

In addition to the one fatality, two minor injuries were reported.

One was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton and the other refused aid at the scene.

Rescue workers said because of the damage to the victim’s vehicle, they could not determine whether she was wearing a seatbelt or not.

Investigators still have not determined why she was driving the wrong direction.

Even though the accident has been cleared from the roadway, southbound traffic was reportedly backed up for eight miles.

More details will be posted as they become available.
