October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in keeping with that, the Swedish Medical Center Mammogram Van will be visiting Port Orchard on Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The van will be located at the South Kitsap Helpline parking lot at 1351 Bay Street.

Soroptimist International of Port Orchard is sponsoring the van to offer low-income and uninsured women in the South Kitsap area who are 40 to 64 years of age the opportunity to have a health screening, including a Pap test, breast exam and mammogram.

Childcare will be provided during the exam, along with refreshments and additional resources.

Funding for the service was raised at the Soroptimists’ annual Fantasy in February Auction, during which attendees enthusiastically bid and donated to “fund a dream.”

Medical and administrative personnel from the Kitsap County Health District, Peninsula Community Health and Swedish Medical Center are participating in the effort to help screen as many women as possible.

Interested women may call the Health District to schedule appointments at (360) 874-5598.

Space is limited, so it’s important to call early.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to the agencies and personnel involved, and all of the donors in our community whose generosity helped provide the funding to make this possible.
