Sports briefs: South Kitsap's Bowden tapped as new Bremerton coach

Darren Bowden was named boys basketball coach earlier this week at Bremerton High School.

Bowden, 41, spent the last 11 seasons as an assistant boys basketball coach under John Callaghan at South Kitsap. During his tenure, the Wolves advanced to the Class 4A state tournament from 2001-06.

“I thought about it long and hard,” said Bowden, who did not apply for the position the first time it was posted. “It’s a good thing we have here.”

But Bowden said he has sought to guide his own program for a while and “it’s a great opportunity that I can’t pass up.”

He replaces Casey Lindberg, who resigned after leading the Knights to the 3A state tournament last season.

HOMECOMING RUN SET FOR SATURDAY

South Kitsap’s track and field and cross country booster club is hosting a homecoming 5-kilometer and one-mile family run Saturday. The 5k begins at 8:30 a.m. with the one-mile run starting 30 minutes later.

Registration is $15 before Saturday and $20 on race day. A T-shirt is included. Sign up at www.skitsap.wednet.edu/1469202315143250/site/default.asp.

POSADAS, OLESON SCORE TWICE IN WIN

Claire Posadas and Brita Oleson each scored two goals to help the Wolves to a 7-0 Narrows League win Tuesday against Mount Tahoma in girls soccer.

South Kitsap (8-0-5 overall, 6-0-5 league) remained in third place in league before its game Thursday at Bellarmine Prep (11-1-1, 9-1-1). The Wolves, who defeated the Lions 2-1 on Sept. 28, are the only team to beat Bellarmine this year.

South closes out the regular season with games Tuesday against Shelton and Thursday at Gig Harbor.
