Sports briefs: Monagle departs UW baseball team

Collin Monagle has left the University of Washington’s baseball program.

UW director of athletic communications Jeff Bechthold confirmed that Monagle, 2009 South Kitsap graduate, no longer is with the Huskies and has left the university. Bechthold said he believed that Monagle transferred to a community college, but did not know which one.

Monagle did not respond to messages seeking comment.

He was limited to 5 2/3 innings as a senior at South after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. He did not pitch last spring for the Huskies after he said he injured both his elbow and shoulder.

“The shoulder wasn’t as ready as I thought it would be in the beginning, so I struggled,” Monagle said in April. “I spent most of the winter trying to strengthen it and felt really good. Everything was coming out live ... and a week later I strained my shoulder.”

Monagle was signed by former UW coach Ken Knutson, who was fired a few months later and replaced by Lindsay Meggs.

Senior point guard Kelsey Callaghan scored 10 points and added five assists in the Wolves’ girls basketball team in their season-opening 50-42 win Dec. 1 at Yelm.
