Sports briefs: Kitsap Pumas win soccer league championship

Forward Robby Christner scored in the 11th minute off a feed from midfielder Bryan Burke to guide the Kitsap Pumas to a 1-0 win against the Laredo Heat in the Premier Development League’s championship Saturday at Bremerton Memorial Stadium.It is the first title for the Pumas, who were founded in 2008.South Kitsap assistant boys soccer coach Dustyn Brim is a goalkeeper for Kitsap. James Ritchie, who coaches the Wolves boys soccer team, is an assistant for the Pumas.

CUNNINGHAM GETS ANOTHER CALL-UP WITH PADRES
Aaron Cunningham, a 2004 South Kitsap High School graduate, was called up from the minor leagues Aug. 1 by the San Diego Padres.The Padres needed another outfielder when veteran Ryan Ludwick was traded July 31 to Pittsburgh.This is Cunningham’s second stint in the major leagues this season. Through Tuesday, he had a .214 batting average with one home run in 28 at-bats with San Diego this season.Cunningham, 25, hit .329 with nine home runs and 63 RBI at Triple-A Tucson.

BLOOMQUIST TAKES OVER AS DIAMONDBACKS’ REGULAR SHORTSTOP
Willie Bloomquist has become a primary starter in the major leagues for the first time since 2009.The 1996 South Kitsap High School graduate became the Arizona Diamondbacks primary shortstop after Stephen Drew suffered a season-ending fractured right ankle last month.Bloomquist, 33, had a .279 batting average, three home runs and 19 RBI through Tuesday.
