New Year's Eve Marathon returns to South Kitsap
December 8, 2011 · 4:34 PM
Running does not have to be a warm-weather activity — particularly in South Kitsap.
For a second consecutive year, Narrows Bridge Running Club is producing a marathon, a half-marathon and a 5-kilometer run Dec. 31.
Race director Tony Seabolt said the concept was developed by South Kitsap resident Ginger Gruber, who “always wanted a marathon in her hometown.”
Seabolt stepped in when demand was higher than anticipated last year. He said more than 200 registered for the race and he expects that number to double this year.
The half-marathon runs from South Kitsap High School to Manchester State Park, while the marathon will finish at KeyBank on Bay Street.
“We eventually see this being more than 1,000 people in three to four years,” Seabolt said. “It’s kind of gotten its own little name now for being the last race of the year.”
Registration rates are $85 for the marathon, $65 for the half-marathon and $25 for the 5k run. Seabolt said that includes a T-shirt and medals for the winners. In addition, he said there is a $16 discount on the marathon and half-marathon for registering at the Route 16 Running & Walking store in Gig Harbor at 67445 Kimble Dr.
All proceeds benefit Port Orchard’s Backpacks for Kids.
