• Overview: Newport has been a steady under Miller’s direction. Since taking over the program in 2004, the Knights never have won fewer than four games or more than seven contests. Some expect that to change this year as Newport features one of the state’s most dynamic signal-callers in 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior Isaac Dotson. A dual-threat quarterback, Dotson combined to rush and pass for more than 1,700 yards last year. He committed to play next season at the University of Nevada. While the Knights never have had an issue scoring points with Dotson — they only were held to fewer than 20 points in a game once last year — containing opponents has been a challenge. Newport surrendered more than 40 points in a game four times last season. In last week’s opener against Capital, which competes in the 2A classification, running back Kai Van Sickle had 141 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. This is the first regular-season meeting between the Knights and South. The programs met three times in the state playoffs from 1992-94.
