South Kitsap grad

in Rays’ rotation

Jason Hammel, a 2000 graduate of South Kitsap High School, will be in the starting rotation for the Tampa Bay Rays when the season begins.

According to the Tampa Bay Tribune, Hammel will join Matt Garza, Edwin Jackson, James Shields and Andy Sonnanstine in the rotation with staff ace Scott Kazmir injured.

Hammel, who posted an 0-1 record and a 7.13 ERA with 21 hits allowed and nine walks in 17 2/3 innings pitched this spring, told the Tribune he didn’t deserve to make the rotation based on his work.

“It’s my job now to prove the decision right,” he said.

He said the home game against Rogers, which also was postponed because of rain on March 14, hasn’t been rescheduled.

South girls tennis coach Todd Olson has rescheduled the Wolves’ match against Bellarmine Prep for 3:30 p.m. Friday.

South originally was scheduled to host the Lions last Friday, but the match was canceled because of rain.
