South punches ticket to sixth-straight state tournament

The Wolves are going back to Tacoma.

Ryan Sweet poured in 16 points and ripped down 15 rebounds Friday night to help lead the No. 3 ranked South Kitsap Wolves past Federal Way 62-56 in the quarterfinals of the West Central/Southwest District Tournament and back to the Class 4A state tournament.

The win moves South, 22-1, into a semifinal match up with Kentwood Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at Puyallup High School. Kentwood, 20-3, beat Foss 50-40 to move on.

South will be making its sixth-straight trip to the state tournament, which will be held March 8-11 at the Tacoma Dome. South's next two games are for seeding purposes only.

The Wolves will play Kentwood for the fourth time in the last two years.

The Conquerors beat South in the title game of the 2004 state tournament and defeated the Wolves in last year's semifinal match up. South topped Kentwood 61-52 last year in the semifinals of the WCD tourney.

Sweet came up huge time after time for the Wolves, who are after their first-ever WCD title. He and senior post Josh Monagle combined for 28 points and 21 rebounds to help keep Federal Way at bay.

After a slow and sloppy start, South led 23-18 at halftime, both teams got their games on track. South twice built a 10-point second half lead but could never put the Eagles away until late.

LP Neloms scored all nine of his points in the second half while Conner Gehring and Evan Atwater both nailed a pair of 3-pointers on their way to eight points each.

South's defense did its job holding Terrell Smith and Pooh Williams to a combined 38 points. The high-scoring duo lit up Mountain View for 62 points on Wednesday night.

Williams scored just five points in the first half but kept the Eagles in the game with 19 second-half points while Smith scored 14.

The winner of the South Kitsap-Kentwood game will face the winner of the Curtis-Prairie game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Puyallup High for the WCD title and the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds into the state tournament.

Tuesday's losers face off at 2 p.m. Saturday at Puyallup for the third and fourth seeds.
