SK tops Bremerton, Wilson in tri-meet

It may have taken a while, but the South Kitsap girls track and field team finally awoke — and it couldn’t have picked a better time to do.

With just over a week before hosting the South Kitsap Invitational, the Wolves came out and dominated a tri-meet with Wilson and Bremerton as many of the team’s top performers rose to the top of the standings.

The South girls got points from just about every event in scoring a total of 91 to top both Wilson and Bremerton, while the boys’ team, which was without a couple of key members, finished second to Wilson, 118-54.4.

“The cold wind couldn’t keep the girls down (Wednesday),” coach Joanne Warren said. “The ladies did an awesome job.”

The Wolves turned in a ton of stellar performances, including a double win by Armeena Dewalt in the 100- and 200-meter runs. Cera Olsen won the 100 hurdles and took third in the 300 hurdles, while Kellie Dalrymple won the 400.

The Wolves dominated the distance events, as they usually do, as Alegra Waldron and Shannon Polley went one-two in the 800 while South swept the 1,600 with Marie Spiker, Shannon Vreeland, Brook Butcher, and Hannah Angel finishing in the top four spots.

Shyla Coleman and Britta Peterson went one-two in the 3,200.

But the girls in the field events also came through, led by Jessie Cousins, who won both the shot put and discus events.

Lindsey Porter took first in pole vault, while Rachel-Diane Frank placed in three events.

“Jessie continues to dominate in the shot and discus,” Warren said. “And she is bringing her teammates up to sandwich the competition.”

While the girls turned in their best meet of the year, the boys struggled but still had some solid performances.

Trevor Boaz won the 1,600, while Renard Williams continued to shine by winning the shot and placing second in the discus.

Kyle Stolp dominated in the 3,200 and Jose Gidican won the high jump.

The Wolves are at Central Kitsap Thursday and play host to the South Kitsap Invitational Saturday.
