South Kitsap wallops Decatur in season opener

"Elton Goodwin said pitchers dominate hitters in the beginning of a baseball season, but the hitters tend to catch up later. If the South Kitsap High School coach is correct, there's no telling how many hits SK will produce later this season after tallying 13 against Decatur for the team's season opener in Port Orchard March 15.For three and a half innings, the Gators nearly matched the Wolves team run for run.But the Wolves' hitting became contagious in the bottom of the fourth inning as seven runs crossed the plate for an 11-3 lead en route to a 13-3 victory. Two more runs scored in the fifth inning to end the game early because of the 10-run rule. The Wolves' next game is a road contest against Curtis next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.Goodwin attributes the team's early offensive prowess to the friendly confines of the SK gymnasium. We took 300 swings (each) last Saturday, Goodwin said. That's a huge advantage. There we have them corralled, it's not cold, and we got 'emright there to work on technique.Senior pitcher Scott Hartung, a lefthander, replaced starter Adam Seward in the third inning and gave up only one run in three innings. But the story of the game was the SK offense.Matt Einspahr's run scoring single and Seann Hammon's fielder's choice put SK up 2-0 in the first inning.Decatur countered with two runs of its own in the second inning, but Jimmy Newell's RBI single in the bottom of the second gave SK a 3-2 lead.Decatur knotted the score at 3-3 in the third inning, but Seward blasted the Wolves' first home run of 2000--a solo shot to right field--in the third inning to give SK a 4-3 lead. They scored, we scored, they scored, Goodwin said. I like that. Adam (Seward) was a little shaky, but (Hartung) came in and threw strikes and we hit the ball. After Hartung pitched a one-two-three fourth inning, the SK bats exploded in the fourth. After Taren Glover's leadoff single, Newell followed with a single, and two batters later, Einspahr laced a double down the right field line to score Glover and Newell for a 6-3 lead. The lead increased to 7-3 after a pair of walks to Seward and Nolan Soete loaded the bases for Hammon, whose sacrifice fly scored Einspahr.A passed ball and an RBI single from Bryan Lefler gave SK a 9-3 advantage. Two more runs crossed the plate before Decatur registered the third out.Einspahr led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on Seward's single. A sacrifice by Soete moved the runners 90 feet and Einspahr scored on a double steal.Hammon ended the game with a double, scoring Seward from second base."
