SK sends 16 grapplers to regionals

"Don't frown if South Kitsap High School wrestling coach Ron Hudiburg doesn't show excitement about his team sending 16 wrestlers to the regional tournament at Foss this Saturday.Hudiburg said he's pleased his team pushed 16 kids and two alternates through. But in the same breath, he said the regional tournament can easily take away the accomplishments from the week before. Some years we've only had one champion (in sub-regionals) and we've done fine in regionals, Hudiburg said. There's been years when we've had five champions and didn't do anything in regionals. Things will change. There's always a surprise and always a disappointment every year. The Wolves utilized their depth at the sub-regional tournament last Saturday to capture their 11th sub-regional title in the last 12 years. They outmuscled the competition with 319.5 points. Peninsula placed second with 278 points.SK seniors Aaron Kipperberg (119 pounds) and Lowell Bosch (171) brought home individual titles.Senior Russ Bishop (171) earned second place after falling to Bosch in the final 10-8.Senior Art Lim (135) and juniors Derek Kipperberg (112) and Evan Winslow (160) also placed second. While senior Patrick Heather (125) took third place after a thrilling 3-1 overtime win against Vinh Huyhn of Wilson, the story of the day was the accomplishments of a pair of SK junior varsity wrestlers.Freshman Pat Kelly and sophomore John Cisney - both junior varsity - muscled their way to third-place finishes.Senior Ezra Marshall (112), also a junior varsity wrestler, advanced to the regional tournament with a fourth-place finish.Other wrestlers who solidified a spot at regionals include Brendon Little (fourth), Albert Fruner (fourth), and Kyle Caldon (fourth).Freshman Micah Kipperberg (103) and sophomore Dustin Johnson (119) took fifth place at sub-regionals and each must wrestle a pigtail match against the No. 4 wrestlers out of the South Puget Sound North Division an hour before the regional matches begin. If they win they're in, but a loss will end their season.SK could possibly have two more wrestlers at regionals.Junior Dean Hoskins (152) and Jacob Kathan (145) earned spots as alternates with sixth place finishes. All it would take is for one wrestler in each weight class to get sick or suffer an injury for an alternate to fill a spot on the bracket.Hudiburg said his job this week is to get his team as mentally prepared as possible. We have our toughest workout on the middle of the week, Hudiburg said. We try to get them ready mentally because that's the big deal.Aaron Kipperberg said this week will be key for him.Though he said he worked hard at the sub-regional, Kipperberg said he was lucky to overcome overtime in the semifinal and championship match.I wasn't on top of my game, Kipperberg said. I didn't do as well as I should have. I was lucky. He didn't wrestle well at all, Hudiberg said. He's going to have to wrestle better than that next week.Kipperberg said he'll use this weak to work on strengthening his weaknesses. You just work really hard at practice and just work on your weaknesses and hope you can come out on top, he said. I'm not very good with my takedowns right now. I'm not confident with them. Physically I can do it but it's the mental part of it.Kipperberg said he doesn't have to look far to get inspiration. He need only look at a freshman teammate to fuel his fire.Pat Kelly, a freshman, makes it to regionals, Kipperberg said. When he goes out there and pins a guy he technically on paper he should lose really fires you up and gets you motivated.Individual results103--Kyle Timbers p.
